Cornering on a road bike requires technique, skill, and practice. Good cornering technique not only increases safety but also efficiency and speed. Here are the most important aspects of proper cornering technique:
1. Line of Sight
Line of sight is crucial. Always look where you want to go, not directly in front of your front wheel. Your body will follow your gaze, so it's important to look far ahead into the corner and toward the exit. This helps maintain a smooth line and identify potential obstacles early.
2. Speed
Adjust your speed before the corner. Brake in time and before entering the corner to ensure a stable position. Braking should be avoided in the corner itself, as it can compromise control and traction.
3. Body Position
Proper body position is essential for stable and safe cornering. Shift your weight back and keep your outside leg extended and firmly on the pedal, while your inside leg remains slightly bent. This increases pressure on the outside pedal and improves traction.
4. Line Choice
Line choice is an important factor for efficient cornering technique. Take a wide line into the corner, clip the apex, and then exit wide again. This allows for a smoother and faster run through the corner. Always pay attention to traffic conditions and possible oncoming traffic, especially on public roads.
5. Pedal Position
Keep the inside pedal up in the corner to avoid it touching the ground and throwing you off balance. This minimizes the risk of a crash and ensures better control.
7. Training and Experience
Good cornering technique comes with practice. Train regularly on different routes and under varying conditions. Continuously analyze and optimize your technique. Riding in groups or with more experienced riders can also be helpful for learning new techniques and tips.
