Cleaning your Jaison bike

Step-by-step guide

Kids’ bikes are often exposed to tough conditions—dirt, mud and water are just some of the challenges. Regular, proper cleaning is crucial to extend the bike’s lifespan and ensure optimal performance. In this article, you’ll find a detailed guide to cleaning your mountain bike properly, plus notes on critical areas that need special attention.

1. Preparation

Before you start cleaning, you’ll need a few basic items:

  • Bike stand (optional, but helpful)
  • Bucket of water
  • Bike cleaner or mild soap
  • Sponges and brushes (various sizes)
  • Toothbrush (for hard-to-reach areas)
  • Chain cleaner and chain oil
  • Drying cloth or microfibre cloth
  • Bike pump and lubricant

2. Rinse-off clean

Ideally, place your bike on a bike stand so you can access all parts. Start with the initial clean:

  • Rinse: Rinse the entire bike with water to remove loose dirt. Don’t use a pressure washer, as it can damage bearings and seals.
  • Tyres and rims: Clean the tyres and rims thoroughly with a sponge and bike cleaner. Make sure there are no stones or foreign objects stuck in the tyre tread.

3. Detailed cleaning

Now it’s time for a detailed clean of the individual components:

  • Frame: Use a soft sponge and bike cleaner to wipe the frame from top to bottom. Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas such as around the bottom bracket and the chainstays.
  • Drivetrain and chain: Use a dedicated chain cleaner or a brush to thoroughly clean the drivetrain and chain. Turn the pedals backwards while cleaning the chain. Make sure the jockey wheels and rear derailleur are clean as well.
  • Brakes: Clean the brake pads and rotors carefully. Avoid getting oil or cleaner on the braking surfaces, as this can reduce braking performance.

4. Drying and lubrication

After cleaning, it’s important to dry the bike well and lubricate the moving parts:

  • Drying: Wipe the bike down with a dry cloth. Make sure no moisture gets into the bearings.
  • Lubrication: After drying, apply chain oil to the chain. Turn the pedals backwards to distribute the oil evenly. Wipe off excess oil with a cloth to prevent it from attracting dirt. Also lightly lubricate the jockey wheels and, if needed, the shift cables.

5. Final check

Finally, check your bike for any damage or wear:

  • Tyres: Check tyre pressure and top up air if needed.
  • Brakes: Check the brake pads and rotors for wear and make sure they work properly.
  • Gears: Test the shifting and make sure all gears change cleanly.

Points that need special attention

When cleaning a mountain bike, there are a few critical areas that need special attention:

  • Bottom bracket and headset: These areas are sensitive to water and dirt. Avoid spraying them directly with water.
  • Suspension: On full-suspension mountain bikes, pay special attention to the seals on the shock and fork. Clean them carefully and don’t use aggressive cleaners.
  • Rear derailleur and chain: These parts are constantly moving and prone to dirt and wear. Regular, thorough cleaning is especially important here.

With regular, careful cleaning and maintenance, your mountain bike will stay in top condition and you’ll enjoy it for a long time. Happy trails!
